Criminal Justice Programs at UCCS

Criminal Justice is a broad and increasingly interdisciplinary field. UCCS's Criminal Justice programs aim to combine the academic liberal arts emphasis with the professional and policy knowledge required to educate criminal justice professionals.

The UCCS Criminal Justice program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates. The program curriculum is designed to accommodate students interested in pursuing professional careers in criminal justice, research, or academics.

Summary:

This full-time faculty line will join a collegial and hard-working team of 11 other full-time faculty that instruct one of the largest majors on the UCCS campus. The Assistant Teaching Professor will teach 4 courses per semester (fall and spring, with potential for 1-2 courses in the summer). Two of these courses will be leading/teaching the internship program (placing students at local agencies, coordinating background checks, teaching the internship course, and evaluating their performance); thus, experience working in or with criminal justice agencies and/or supporting student/employee training is required. Other course assignments may include but are not limited to: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Contemporary Issues in Social and Public Policy, Violence in Society, and/or specialized courses within the forensic, law enforcement, or cybercrime focus area. Teaching requirements (80% effort) will include on campus, hybrid, and online courses within the undergraduate criminal justice program and potential to teach in the graduate criminal justice program (depending on experience and education), and the dual degree programs (with sociology, psychology, and public administration) offered within the department of criminal justice. The Assistant Teaching Professor will be expected to prepare and teach courses that contribute to the core and elective curriculum. Additionally, they may be asked to mentor students, facilitate independent studies, mentor students on thesis/capstones, and contribute to the curriculum development within the department.

The Assistant Teaching Professor is also expected to be an engaged faculty member contributing (20% effort) to the essential duties of the department (e.g., participating in faculty meetings, serving on department, College, and campus committees, advising student clubs, engaging with the community, and other essential need of the department and college).

The Assistant Teaching Professor is an instructional faculty position not eligible for tenure. A January 2025 start date is preferred.

Essential Functions:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • The Assistant Teaching Professor must be able to deliver high-quality instruction in both the core and elective curriculum in various formats (on campus, hybrid, and online).
  • The ability to coordinate with internship agencies and teach two sections of internship per semester.
  • The position requires a flexible schedule as course offerings are scheduled both during the day and the evening to meet student needs.
  • Example of courses that may be assigned include but are not limited to: Criminal Justice Internship, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Contemporary Issues in Social and Public Policy, Violence in Society, and/or specialized courses within the forensic, law enforcement, or cybercrime focus area.
  • The position requires an ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a collegial member of a team.
  • The position requires an ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • The Assistant Teaching Professor will be expected to contribute to a climate of support for students.

Work Location: Hybrid (50% remote, 50% on-site)

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

What We Offer:

Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs offers excellent benefits, some of which include:

Tentative Search Timeline:
  • Priority will be given to applications submitted by October 8, 2024. However, this posting will remain open until filled.
  • The potential dates for video interviews with the search committee will be October 21, 2024 & October 22, 2024.
  • The potential dates for campus interviews with the supervisor, appointing authority, and other stakeholders will be November 6, 13, & 18, 2024.
  • The potential employee preferred start date is January 1, 2025. A Fall 2025 start date will be considered.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Has obtained at a minimum a master's degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related discipline (e.g., sociology, psychology, political science) from an accredited institution, or a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • At least 5 years applied work experience with a criminal justice agency.
  • Must be able to teach criminal justice courses in a variety of formats, including on campus, hybrid, and online.
  • Must be able to coordinate with criminal justice agencies (e.g., internships, events, guest speakers, and other CJ curriculum needs).



Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 months of teaching experience, which may include teaching at the secondary or postsecondary levels and/or leading professional training(s).
  • Prior experience teaching in multiple formats (on campus, hybrid, online).
  • Areas of specialization are open, but preference will be given to applicants with experience in cybercrime, forensics, policing, and/or who can contribute to the creation of a new and innovative option areas/certificate within the criminal justice curriculum.
  • Prior experience coordinating with criminal justice agencies to support the department's internship program needs.
  • Existing Relationships with criminal justice agencies in the Colorado Springs area.
